English Fundamentals

Review English grammar and learn to communicate more effectively.

This course introduces some of the basic elements of English grammar, and shows how to apply this grammar when you write or speak. The course aims to develop participants' grammatical accuracy, listening and reading comprehension and writing ability. 

Course Fee

The course costs R9 900 per module.

Classes are subject to a minimum of 8 students. We reserve the right not to run a particular course in an intake if there is insufficient demand. 

Duration

This course is a contact, part-time course and each module runs for 10 weeks (40 hours), excluding the examination session. 

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a Certificate of Competence for each module. 

Programme Overview

The English Fundamentals course is divided into two modules.

The first module, English Fundamentals, Part 1 aims to improve students’ productive (speaking and writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Students are exposed to a variety of texts and writing types. They are also introduced to the fundamentals of English grammar and brainstorming.

The second module, English Fundamentals, Part 2 aims to improve students’ productive (speaking and writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Students are exposed to a variety of texts and writing types. They are also introduced to the fundamentals of English grammar and brainstorming.

Curriculum

In module 1, students are exposed to the following types of reading (internet new reports, short biographies and encyclopaedia entries), listening (new reports, interviews and short talks) and writing (informal emails, review of movies and comparative paragraphs) activities. They are also introduced to  the various tenses and supported in accurately applying them in their various tasks.

Module 2 exposes students to different types of reading (job advertisements, newspaper reports, advice columns and editorials); listening (conversations, radio interviews and monologues); and writing (CVs, cover letter, narrative paragraphs and comparative paragraphs) activities. They are also introduced to linkers, prefixes and suffixes, phrasal verbs and word combinations and supported in accurately applying them in their various tasks.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course: 

  • 18 years or older
  • No specific school or tertiary qualification is required
  • All students must be literate and numerate
  • All students are required to complete a pre-assessment to determine the student’s level of English proficiency (the pre-assessment is done on-site and takes 1 hour)
  • Entry to this course is dependent on students demonstrating NQF level 2 language proficiency.
