Copy-editing and Proofreading

Develop the skills needed to work as an editor or proofreader.

Do you pull out a red pen when you see typos and awkward sentences? Are you particular about word choice? Does correcting language mistakes give you a sense of satisfaction? If so, you may have the right personality to become a copy editor. Learn to edit and proofread documents professionally!

The Copy-editing and Proofreading course will teach you the skills you need to make a living as a professional editor. An experienced editor will guide you through the course and tasks.

Duration

This is a 10 week self-paced program - asynchronous with no live sessions.

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a certificate of competence.

Programme Overview

Learn to:
? distinguish between copy-editing and proofreading
? maintain a style sheet
? use an editing reference and style guide effectively when copy-editing and proofreading
? identify, flag, and query content-related errors in a variety of text types
? identify, correct, and justify spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting errors in a variety of text types
? use MS Word tracking when copy-editing
? use common proofreading symbols correctly when copy-editing a hard copy of a text
? copy-edit and proofread text in pdf format

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course:

  • Minimum of NQF Level 7 qualification (3-year degree or equivalent)
  • At least 60% on the pre-assessment test (Tests overall English knowledge)
  • Reliable access to a computer with MS Word, internet, printer, and scanner
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Word, email, and internet)
  • Reliable internet (WiFi) connection
  • Access to one of the prescribed style guides and dictionaries (costs not included in course fee)
Career Opportunities

Editors work in a variety of  sectors, including media, government, and academia. Candidates who complete this course can also enter the freelance market.
