Uploading an Image

Please note that you have a limit of 2Mb on images that can be loaded. Refer to Recommended image sizes for specific dimensions.

Please make use of an image editing tool to create the image with the appropriate size and save them with a name and the size for ease of reference.

  • Open the Media Library and expand Categorised. Then expand the category, Wits University.
  • Under Wits University folder, locate your department or school. Click on your folder.
  • Then select on the Add Media button located on the top right.

  • The following window will appear. To add the image, click to choose, and select the image from your computer.

    1. Media file: click within the box and the file-open dialog will popup. Use that to select the relevant image.
    2. Media type: this will be automatically detected where possible. If an incorrect type is selected, select the media type from the list.
    3. Name: enter a name for your Image. By default, this is not output on the site, but is used only as a name in the Media Library to allow easy identification.
    4. Description: by default, this is used as the alt tag and should be filled in for images. This text will be displayed when one hovers the mouse over the image. When a visually impaired person accesses this image, the text in the description will be read out by the screen reader. There is no need to modify anything further but the rest of the options are explained nonetheless.
    5. Syntax highlighting language: for non-binary files you can select what syntax highlighting to use (if any). This does not apply to images, PDFs, etc.
    6. Media Language Dependence:
      • Fully independent: the media is the same in all languages and can hence not be translated.
      • Independent media file: the file and thumbnail exist independent of language. Other elements can be modified based on language.
      • Fully dependent: all elements depend on language and can be translated.

The rule is that the image being uploaded must start with your department name as a prefix.

For example images for the Engineering and Build Environment will start with EBE-. Basically, it is an abbreviation of the department followed by a hyphen (minus sign) and then a short descriptive name.
