Overview
An innovative and exciting executive programme for effective leadership of legal professionals, law firms and legal institutions is now being offered.

The VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) environment of the 21st Century has challenged and disrupted legal firms and practice. Rapidly advancing technology, remote working models, client service expectations are among the factors requiring a new vision, understanding, clarity and agility.

Leadership, strategic thinking skills, the management of change, and communication and inter-personal skills, are among key capacities requiring ongoing development. The practitioner-orientated, interactive approach of this course utilizes case studies, simulations, group-work and self-evaluation exercises to reflect-on and further build-on your current experience - enhancing and empowering your future strategic-leadership trajectory.

Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

  • Analyse the challenges of improving performance in complex contexts.
  • Recognise the politics and dynamics of internal and external interpersonal relationships to build productive teams.
  • Exercise strategic agility to direct, align, and build trust and accountability.
  • Learn and lead in response to the changing demands of legal practice.

Course Content
The course consists of the following modules:

  • Leading Performance in Complex Contexts: The challenges of leading and managing firms or departments in complex contexts. Understanding performance in the context of changing legal practices.
  • Building Productive Relationships: Self-awareness and self-mastery; High-trust relationships and conflict; Adaptive teams and working cultures.
  • Influencing Strategy and Alignment: Sustainable business strategy; Defining direction, aligning, and coordinating work and building commitment.
  • Communication and Reflective Learning: Reflecting on practice to learn and adapt; Communicating effectively with clients, partners, and associates; Creating sustainable, long-term change.

Target Audience
Team, group, and firm leaders in legal practice, as well as those who wish to improve their leadership abilities.

Application Process
A relevant Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Commerce in Law or Bachelor of Arts in Law or equivalent qualification and 3 years of work experience.

You will be required to submit a copy of your Bachelors Degree, academic record as well as a copy of your identity document or passport.

Kindly note that all foreign qualifications must be submitted with a SAQA Evaluation Letter

Additional Information
The following certificate can be obtained: 

  • Certificate of Attendance: To obtain a certificate of attendance, participants are required to attend and participate in 80% of the lectures and complete all the activities as required. 

This postgraduate certificate course is accredited by the university in accordance with its statutory mandate.  It does not lead to a qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework.
