René Hochreiter

René Hochreiter was appointed to The S V Kearney Education Trust as a Trustee at its inception and is the current Chair of the Trust. He is a director of companies with interests in the minerals and resources sectors in South Africa. He completed his degrees in Geology and Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1979 and 1982 respectively. He was voted top platinum analyst in the Financial Mail Analysts of the Year Awards for 10 consecutive years from 1995 to 2004.

René was a personal friend of Steve Kearney’s, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru with him, and spent many hours fly fishing with him and his son, Matthew.

Moeketsi Maforah

Moeketsi is a lawyer by profession, having graduated with a B Juris LLB degree from the North West University. In addition, he has a Certificate of Proficiency from the Insurance Institute of South Africa (COP IISA). He is presently chairman of Maforah Nkwe Investments (Pty) Ltd.

Moeketsi was one of the original Trustees of The S V Kearney Education Trust. He worked with Steve Kearney for some time when he (Moeketsi) was employed at Bell Dewar, the company which provided legal Counsel to Impala Platinum and Royal Bafokeng Holdings.

Deon Meiring

Deon Meiring has a PhD Degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Deon is a licensed psychologist, registered in the category Industrial Psychology at the Health Professions Council of South Africa. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Economic Management Sciences, University of Pretoria, where he is the master’s programme coordinator for Industrial Psychology. In 2007 he was appointed Assistant Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Industrial Psychology at Stellenbosch University, a position he still holds. Before joining the University of Pretoria, he practised as a Senior Industrial Psychologist in the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 19 years (1991–2010), where he focused on specialised selection and assessment practices.

Deon was a friend of Steve Kearney's and was instrumental in setting up the Trust in Steve’s memory. Deon served as the Trust’s first Chair.

Mzila Mthenjane

Mzila joined the Trust in 2012. He holds a BSc degree in Mining Engineering and a certificate in Senior Management Development from the GIMT School of Business. He has 20 years of experience in both mining and investment banking. His experience includes seven years in deep level gold mining at AngloGold Ashanti and roles in senior mine management and corporate development at Gold Fields Limited. He worked for six years as an investment banker at RMB and Deutsche Bank, and gained invaluable investment banking experience during this time. His knowledge of business sustainability was honed during a six-year period in the role of Executive: Business Sustainability at Royal Bafokeng Holdings and Royal Bafokeng Platinum. He assumed his current role as Exxaro’s Executive Head: Strategy and Corporate Affairs in May 2013.

Robinn Kearney

Robinn was appointed to the Trust in 2006 and served as Chair from 2008-2012. She and Steve came to South Africa in the 1980’s when Steve joined Stilfontein Gold Mine as a mining engineer. They had two children – Matthew (1991) and Shannon (1994). Robinn worked in the securities industry as a mining analyst, Director of research, and Director of the listed company. She currently volunteers much of her time to the CFA Institute and other Trusteeships, and spends some of her time in Colorado where she was born and raised.
