Hydrogeology

One of the critical challenges in the study and management of groundwater resources in southern Africa is a lack of reliable instrumentation.

The Hydrogeology Research Lab in the School of Geosciences seeks to address this with a range of state-of-the-art water analysis instrumentation.

Currently, the laboratory is equipped with a TLC and Dip meter (for groundwater level measurement), interface meter (for hydrocarbon leakage detection in groundwater), bacteriological incubator (for bacterial culture from surface and ground water), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5) instrument, LGR liquid Water Isotope analyser and PDV Ultra trace metal analyser besides field based multi parameter water quality instruments and flow meter.

This laboratory is managed by Prof. Tamiru Abiye, tamiru.abiye@wits.ac.za.
