Mental Health Services

WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It has intrinsic and instrumental value and is integral to our well-being.

WHO ARE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS

The mental health service is offered by Sister Simangele, who is a qualified mental health nurse. She provides the following services.

  • The mental health nurse conducts the mental health evaluation and provides treatment.
  • Students are referred to the psychiatrist for further mental health treatment.
  • Students needing admission will be assessed, a referral letter written, and assisted with admission either to private or public hospitals.
  • Advising and supporting patients
  • Providing mental health education

Additionally, we have 3 sessional psychiatrists (Doctors). They offer the following services.

  • Diagnosing patients
  • Prescribes medication.
  • Providing referral letters when needed

CAMPUS HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTRE

Campus Health & Wellness Centre (CHWC) offers a wide variety of health services to Wits students. Wits Mental Health Services offers blended services which include virtual and contact consultations.


WHERE TO FIND US

You will find us on the Lower Ground floor of the Student Union Building below the Matrix, on Braamfontein Campus East. Please book an appointment so that we can minimize the time required to wait for assistance, and to accommodate all those who require help.

  • Time Mon-Fri (08h00-16h30).
  • Online bookings are required before the appointment.
  • Internal referrals from CCDU, OSS, Emthonjeni, GEO, and others are required.
  • External referral is required when the student has been diagnosed and is on treatment.
  • Self-referrals are also accepted.
