Lebo Siboyi has been selected to attend ‘The 7th Lindau Meeting of the Laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel’.
The School of Economics and Finance (SEF) and the broader Wits Community congratulate Lebo Siboyi for being selected to attend ‘The 7th Lindau Meeting of the Laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel’. Lebo was nominated in recognition of her excellent academic achievements in her Master of Economic Sciences. Following a rigorous selection process, Lebo’s application for participation in this prestigious meeting was successful.
The meeting held from the 23rd to 27th of August 2022 in Lindau Germany had over 400 young economists from all over the world in attendance. Lebo enjoyed the lecturers presented by Prof Joseph Stiglitz (economic dynamics, inflation and macroeconomic inconsistencies), Prof Oliver Hart (corporate social responsibility), Prof Finn E. Kydland (economic growth in Spain, Italy and Portugal) and Prof Christopher A. Sims (Econometrics) and a panel discussion focused on the economics and politics of war and sanctions. Lebo gained much exposure to the groundbreaking research presented by the Laureates. She intends to use the knowledge in South Africa. The Next Gen Economics sessions by young economists also opened up Lebo’s world to the kind of research that other economists are engaged in and the kind of problems they are aiming to solve. According to Lebo, the exchange of ideas, experience and knowledge with other young economists made her realise that there is still a lot of research that needs to be done to come up with the best policies that can serve South Africa and Africa as a whole.

Wits’ School of Economics and Finance wishes Lebo all the best in her career (she is currently a Junior Economist at the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and is on a secondment contract for a year at the Bureau for Economic Research, Stellenbosch University).
