Visionary graduates committed to educational transformation

- WSOE

Dr Juliet Perumal, Head of the Wits School of Education, to new students at the School.

The University of the Witwatersrand is an institution with over a century of history. It ranks among the top universities worldwide and is one of the top two universities on the African continent. The Wits School of Education proudly boasts a rich history of producing world-class, visionary graduates who are committed to educational transformation. Our graduates have achieved prominence in the education sector, with many holding influential roles in both public and private sectors, nationally and internationally.

Innovative knowledge creation

As a world-class institution, the Wits School of Education is driven by a relentless pursuit of innovative knowledge creation. The various programmes we offer are designed to ignite a lifelong passion for learning. At the WSOE, we aim to do more than just assess whether our students have mastered specific subject content and passed exams. We strive to ask different questions, recognising that each of our students brings a rich and unique set of experiences. Thus, what we teach, how we teach, and whom we teach are pivotal in creating a teaching and learning experience that is relevant and responsive to you, our students.

We are committed to fostering the development of educators and researchers who are equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are designed to empower students through rigorous academic coursework, practical experience, and a robust research foundation. Our staff is composed of leading scholars and practitioners who are passionate about education and dedicated to mentoring the next generation of educators. Our commitment to research-led education means that our students are not only recipients of knowledge but also contributors to the growing body of educational research. We encourage our students to engage with real-world issues, apply innovative solutions in their teaching, and lead transformative changes in their communities.

New approaches to education

Past and prevailing global challenges and changes have necessitated a re-evaluation of our traditional approaches to education. This, coupled with the rapid adoption of digital and smart technologies, underscores the need for adaptability, tech-savviness, and a forward-looking approach. We encourage our students, as aspiring educators, to join the quest for educational transformation geared towards social justice.

It is my hope that as the WSOE academic and professional support staff accompany you through the various programmes, we will together evolve into critically reflective educationalists who experience positive change in our personal and professional lives, while making a meaningful impact on the societies in which we live and learn.
