The National e-Science Postgraduate Teaching and Training Platform (NEPTTP)

Do you have an honours degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or in the Social Sciences and Humanities, coupled with a keen interest in the interdisciplinary emerging fields of Data Science?

Join the e-science programme

The National e-Science Postgraduate Teaching and Training Platform (NEPTTP) is multi-institutional programme that is growing qualifications, curricula and pedagogic interventions to advance the training of postgraduate students in the rapidly developing cross-disciplinary fields involved in e-Science.

The implementation of the NEPTTP project is championed by a Consortium of six South African universities: North West University (NWU), Sol Plaatje University (SPU), University of Limpopo (UL), University of Pretoria (UP), University of Venda (UniVen), and Wits University.

Students register with their Home Institution but complete the coursework component at Wits in the first year. On completion of the coursework modules, students will move back to their Home Institutions for their second year of study, to complete the Research Report.

Once qualified, successful students can look forward to a promising career. Opportunities exisit in data-oriented roles within academic institutions, social and policy research organisations (governmental and non-governmental), and the private sector (technology, healthcare companies and the finance sector).  Data scientist positions involve a wide range of responsibilities; such as conducting exploratory data analysis, applying statistical methodologies, deriving business insights from data, partnering with company executives, product and engineering teams to solve problems, identify trends and opportunities, inform, influence, support, and execute product decisions and launches.

Two masters degrees are offered - see the Wits course finder entries below, or visit the national website.
