Anaesthesiology The Department is spread over 5 training sites: Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital, Rahima Moosa Hospital, and Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre.
Surgery The department is a diverse, modern South African society. Our biggest asset is our people. We not only train registrars from South Africa but also from our neighbouring countries Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Swaziland.
Paediatrics & Child Health This department is involved with comprehensive care of individual children in the community as well as addressing health-related issues affecting populations of children.
Forensic Medicine & Pathology The role of the department is the performance of post mortem examinations and investigations in all cases of unnatural deaths. This includes testifying in our Courts on facts, special investigations and evidence found during autopsies.
Internal Medicine The strength of Internal Medicine, is its large & diverse clinical training platform, allowing exposure to a vast number of patients for teaching of medical students as well as postgraduate students, the majority of whom are medical registrars.
Neurosciences The Department of Neurosciences provides a comprehensive Otorhinolaryngology service in line with international best practice standards
Family Medicine & Primary Care Family Medicine refers to the body of knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for the provision of primary, continuing, comprehensive, personalised, holistic care to individuals, their families and community.
Obstetrics & Gynaecology The Department teaches Obstetrics and Gynaecology to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University, with divisions at the three major teaching hospitals: Charlotte Maxeke, Chris Hani Baragwanath and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.
Psychiatry The acute psychiatric admission units are high turnover multidisciplinary units which provide specialist psychiatrist cover for casualty, as well as consultation-liaison psychiatry and outpatient psychiatry clinics over and above dedicated inpatient psychiatric care in designated units.
Radiation Sciences Radiation sciences professionals work with physicians to gather accurate patient information for the diagnosis, treatment, and/or research of disease and injury. They provide direct patient care, produce quality images, and deliver treatment using a variety of radiation sources.

The School boasts many Research Centres and Units contributing to the University's ever-increasing research output. The School has seen a significant increase in the number of Masters of Medicine qualifying and is a major supplier of specialists in the country.
